What is counted. Persons killed in reported road traffic accidents, using the international 30-day rule (death within 30 days of the crash counts as a road fatality). This is the OECD/IRTAD/Eurostat-comparable basis — higher than preliminary police "scene" counts (e.g. ~75 for 2022).
Trend. Down ~43% over the decade (120 → 68). 2024 is the lowest since records began in 1954. The 2020 dip (80) reflects pandemic traffic restrictions, not a safety improvement; 2021 rebounded (114) as traffic returned. 2016 (130) is the decade peak.
Caveats. 2015–2016 values are approximate (±2) from reconstructed series; endpoint years (2020, 2022, 2024) and the overall trajectory are firm. Small annual counts are volatile — single-year moves of ±15 are noise, not signal. Absolute counts, not population-adjusted; population rose ~3% over the period, so the per-capita decline is marginally steeper.
